Use the long summer days to get ready for event season! It's time to start planning, and in IOCC's 25th Anniversary year, the calendar is filling up. Here are some things to think about as you plan your parish activities for the next few months.
Want to do something on your own? To dedicate a birthday, race, or create your own campaign, check out DIY fundraising and give purpose to your passion.
If a reception or spaghetti dinner is more your speed, call 410.243.9820 or email email@example.com to get a date on the calendar. We’d love to schedule a speaker for you, so please give us a heads up and time to work on scheduling.
IOCC Sunday is November 19 this year; think about getting a presentation on your parish calendar and asking whether you can host a coffee hour or take a special offering for IOCC. Stay tuned for posters and other materials.
#GivingTuesday is November 28—watch for special announcements and opportunities to give and share on Facebook.

Voice of Experience: Bahamas Home Build July 2017
Here’s what volunteer Christie Dionisos shared after working in Nassau this month:
“I decided to get involved because I enjoy giving back to the community. My love for service ultimately stems from my love for Christ, so this IOCC home build was especially wonderful because I got to fuse service with faith.
My biggest takeaway from this experience is to be aware of the need around you. We tend to go about our lives with our heads down, and I saw this amongst the tourists in the Bahamas. My goal is to look outward more, with my head up and eyes wide open.”
Thanks, Christie, for serving and for sharing!
What Moves You? #IOCC25
What do you love about IOCC? We want to hear your story: tell us on Facebook, and tag us! Need inspiration? Check out the videos in the next section, from others like you who’ve worked with IOCC.
Your gifts offer more than help in times of need; they offer hope. Here’s what one Ethiopian man, an Orthodox priest himself, shared about overcoming podo with your help:
“One Sunday, my hopes changed. At that time, the priest [giving the day’s homily] announced that podoconiosis is preventable and treatable, and that those living with podo should seek treatment offered by IOCC … After obtaining the education on the treatment and prevention of podo from IOCC staff, I now wash my feet daily with water and soap … I want to stay healthy and lead a productive life.”
Father Tamiru’s feet are now healthy, and he’s back to farming, following his new regimen. He is just one example of the support you have provided to those suffering from podo since 2009. Read more about Ethiopia projects here.
IOCC Awareness Events
Organizing an IOCC event in your parish or community? IOCC Outreach is here to help you plan and publicize. To get your local IOCC event on the calendar, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
On July 14, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church organized a special event in its East/West series, co-hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church. More than 120 people from both communities joined in an evening prayer service, followed by a reception and brief program. The evening’s speaker was Dr. Vasilea Digidiki, a visiting scholar at Harvard University, who shared her personal experience serving refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos. IOCC Development Officer Lou Zagami also spoke, highlighting IOCC’s various projects responding to the crisis in Syria. Lou shared IOCC’s work in Syria and the surrounding region, touching upon many of the issues raised by Dr. Digidiki. The evening concluded with a Q&A session and opportunity for conversation. Thanks to Fr. Robert Holet, Greg Stronko, Cynthia Patzig, and all the volunteers who organized this informative evening!
IOCC supporters in the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area came out in force on July 22 for fellowship and a baseball game, with the hometown Cleveland Indians defeating the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Fantastic fireworks followed the game, now a long-standing IOCC Cleveland tradition. IOCC Baseball Night at Progressive Field is a fun chance each summer for volunteers to get together and support the Cleveland Indians and IOCC at the same time. Congrats on the win—and thanks for all that you do!
