IOCC is closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Harvey as it continues to impact Southern Texas and Louisiana. Our staff remains in contact with partners, including members of national and local VOADs (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). Additionally, IOCC is activating the Frontliners, our emergency response network, to offer emotional and spiritual care to the people affected by the storm. Even after the storm subsides, IOCC’s work to clean and rebuild homes will continue into the coming weeks and months.

Start the Year Strong: IOCC Sunday | Nov. 19
This year’s IOCC Sunday, “A Day of Sharing,” is November 19—and just around the corner. Plan ahead! Here are some ways you can help:
Encourage clergy participation. Talk with your priest about reading the IOCC Sunday Encyclical from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States, and take a special collection for IOCC.
Plan an event or IOCC display. Organize a coffee hour, presentation, or luncheon to introduce the meaningful change that IOCC brings to families devastated by poverty, hunger, and disaster.
Get parish youth involved. Encourage the youth group or Sunday School to organize a kit drive or their own IOCC fundraiser—a car wash, dance-a-thon, or spaghetti dinner. Get creative!
Contact an Outreach Coordinator (410-243-9820; firstname.lastname@example.org) to request posters, prayer booklets, brochures, icon cards, and magnets, or to talk about your creative ideas!
The fourth annual Serv-X-Treme! youth leadership conference took place this year July 29–August 4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Established as IOCC’s signature youth program, the conference brings together rising high school juniors and seniors to gain a deeper understanding of Orthodox philanthropy and diakonia (service) through service and leadership.
During the week-long conference, participants worked on home builds with Habitat for Humanity, visited with other faith-based relief groups to understand their models for philanthropy, and conducted group exercises to build leadership skills, explore their passions, and understand the importance of devoting time and talents to serving others.

IOCC supporters in the Greater Denver area gathered once again at St. Catherine’s Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday, August 19 for their annual Pan-Orthodox 5K Run/Walk for IOCC. The Pan-Orthodox event brought together more than 100 people and several clergy from more than 10 local Orthodox churches. The race was followed by the Blessing of the Five Loaves, and a wonderful meal and fellowship. Many thanks to board member Elaine Cladis, to Omar Rihani, and to everyone who worked so hard to make this awesome event possible!

Teens at Antiochian Convention Asssemble 1,000 Kits
As part of this summer’s 53rd Biannual Archdiocesan Convention of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, a special humanitarian social event took place for the teens. Youth from all over the country gathered in Hollywood, Florida to assemble emergency kits for those in need around the world. His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph also stopped by during the assembly to bless the project. In all, the Antiochian teens were able to complete and contribute 1,000 hygiene kits which were delivered in person to the warehouse in New Windsor, Maryland. These kits will make a critical difference to people facing hardship worldwide. Incredible — thank you!
