IOCC Volunteer Update - August 2016

IOCC Volunteer Update – August 2016
Start the New Church Year with IOCC!

Autumn is almost here, and IOCC Outreach needs YOU. Share what you love about IOCC in your church, school, and community.

  1. Sign on as a parish representative and keep your church up to date with how their support makes a difference.
  2. Plan a reception or event and schedule an IOCC speaker to visit.
  3. Dedicate a race or create your own campaign for IOCC.

Your efforts support the areas of greatest need, ensuring that together we can respond quickly and effectively during disasters. You also help to sustain life-saving programming in forgotten corners of the world—serving some of the world's most vulnerable people with clean water, education, nutrition support, and so much more. Thank you! To learn more or to get started, call an Outreach Coordinator today at 410-243-9820, or email outreach@iocc.org.

Denver, CO

On Saturday, August 20, 2016, the annual Pan-Orthodox 5K Run/Walk for IOCC took place in Denver. St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church hosted the event, which brought together more than 75 people and several clergy from more than 10 local Orthodox churches. Parishioners of all ages competed, including 90-year-old George Papadeas, a long-time IOCC supporter. The race was followed by the Blessing of the Five Loaves, as well as a wonderful meal and fellowship. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and resources to make this a successful event for all!
Houston, TX

St. George Orthodox Church hosted their third Relief for the Syrian Crisis Benefit Dinner on Sunday, August 28, 2016, to help those suffering from the ongoing crisis. More than 150 participants joined us from several local Orthodox churches, including 13 local clergymen. The evening's program included a special presentation and Q&A session by IOCC Gift Officer Nick Kasemeotes, who shared IOCC's work in both Syria and surrounding countries in response to the needs created by long-term conflict. Fr. James Shadid, presiding priest at St. George; event host, Fr. Michael Lambakis, presiding priest at Annunciation; and IOCC Country Representative Dan Christopulos also shared a few words with the crowd. A wide variety of Middle Eastern delicacies was served, and a local jazz band provided live entertainment. Thanks go to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize this event!

Louisville, KY

This past spring, the Teen SOYO at St Michael Orthodox Church in Louisville, Kentucky, assembled 334 health kits for those in need. The young people collected supplies during the five Sundays of Lent and assembled the kits themselves on Lazarus Saturday – a fantastic philanthropic initiative for the season of Great Lent. Thank you to the teens and their advisers who made this contribution possible!

Daily Prayer for IOCC Volunteers
O Heavenly King, Comforter, who grants all blessings,
we thank You for Your abundant grace and mercies.
Help us to be good stewards of Your treasury through the ministry of IOCC.
Help us to strip ourselves of our earthly adornment,
so that the poor may be sufficiently clothed and fed.
And, by so loving our neighbor, adorn us with the everlasting pearls of virtue instead.
Where there is suffering, help us to bring Your mercy. Where there is despair, Your hope;
Where there is war, allow us to present You who are the Prince of Peace;
Where there is pain, You who are the Comforter; Where there is hatred, You who are Love;
Where there is death and destruction; You who are the Resurrection and Life.
Daily guide our work in IOCC, so that we may do all things,
in every place and at all times, for Your glory. Amen.
