Pan-Orthodox Festival To Kick Off "Race"

July 18, 2002

New York, N.Y. (IOCC) — A pan-Orthodox cultural festival being held in lower Manhattan on Saturday, July 27, will help kick off a cross-country bicycle race to benefit International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC).

The "Taste of Orthodoxy" Festival will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 27 at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 15 W. 25th St. (between 6th and Broadway), New York, N.Y.

It will feature food, drink, entertainment and vendors representing a variety of Eastern Orthodox cultures and traditions. The festival will serve as a kickoff event for the "Race to Respond," an IOCC benefit ride that begins Aug. 3.

Founded in 1992, IOCC is the official humanitarian aid agency of Orthodox Christians. All proceeds from the festival will go to support IOCC's worldwide humanitarian mission.

In just 10 years, IOCC has provided more than $140 million in relief and development programs to some of the world's most vulnerable people - orphans, refugees, the elderly, people with disabilities - in 21 countries.

The "Race to Respond" will take five amateur cyclists from New Jersey to California in 25 days to raise awareness and support for the humanitarian work of IOCC.

The "Taste of Orthodoxy" festival is being hosted by the IOCC New York Metropolitan Committee, a group of volunteers that supports IOCC through events and fund-raising. The New York group is one of 26 metropolitan committees throughout the United States.
