Putting Faith into Action
|Volume 15, No. 2
Twenty years after its founding by the Orthodox Christian Hierarchs in America, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Chairman of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops, reflects on the ministry of IOCC. Spring is a season of renewal for nature and for Orthodox Christians. Just as we witness the rebirth of plants and flowers emerging from their period of dormancy, we are also reborn through the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and filled with the spirit of Christ's love for one another.
As St. Paul urges the Colossians, "Live in Christ, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving" (Colossians 2:6-7).
It is for those who are without, whether lacking in food, a safe home, warm clothes or physical ability that Christ calls upon us to give our love and our support. For the past two decades, many have answered His call through support of International Orthodox Christians Charities, a ministry that has provided immeasurable relief to our brothers and sisters struggling around the world and a renewal of hope to those who are most vulnerable among us. Kindness begets kindness, and when we share goodness we share God’s divine presence. Remember the apostolic advice, "Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4). Responding to someone in need comes in many forms, and no act of kindness is too small or insignificant. It is not our place to measure and weigh how much or how little is appropriate. In God’s eyes, our acts of compassion are all worthy, bringing us closer to our brothers and sisters and closer to Him.
As we continue to welcome this celebration of rebirth and renewal, follow the path that leads towards God. Through Him we will find faith taking deeper root, greater love for others and a greater joy in putting that faith in action in the service of others.
