IOCC Volunteer Update – December 2009
“None in this noisy era spoke so softly and yet was heard so widely as he. None spoke less and yet said more. None in our delusional age confronted truth with such calmness as he.” — Serb poet M. Betskovic about the late Patriarch Pavle

TSEROVANI, GEORGIA
The thirty-minute drive from Tbilisi to Tserovani offers a quick lesson in Georgian history. Just outside of Tbilisi is Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia and site of Georgia's conversion to Christianity in the 4th century. Seen from the highway, Mtskheta's grand Svetitskhoveli Cathedral stands as a monument to a civilization that has preserved its Christian character despite centuries of foreign invasions. But just a few kilometers down the road, the settlement of Tserovani stands as a new monument of sorts to a somber chapter in Georgia's history: last August's war with Russia and the resulting humanitarian crisis. PATRIARCH PAVLE
His Beatitude, Patriarch Pavle of Serbia fell asleep in the Lord on November 15, 2009. His Beatitude was a great spiritual leader during a time of tremendous upheaval for the Serbian people, and he was a great friend of IOCC. The staff of IOCC would like to extend its most sincere condolences to the Hierarchy, clergy and all the faithful of the Serbian Orthodox Church. May his memory be eternal!

DECEMBER VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT
The Albuquerque Metropolitan Committee

We want every Orthodox home in America to know about the important work of IOCC. That is why IOCC developed Metropolitan Committees, groups of volunteers who play a vital role in supporting the humanitarian mission of IOCC through fundraising special events and awareness-building efforts. Currently, IOCC has 36 Metropolitan Committees across the United States, including Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Albuquerque Metropolitan Committee is one of IOCC's newest committees, organized only a few months prior to planning their first fundraising event for IOCC. On November 14, 2009, the IOCC Albuquerque Metropolitan Committee held its first annual dinner at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. The Albuquerque community gathered for a pan Orthodox Vespers service, followed by dinner, entertainment, and a presentation by keynote speaker and Chairman of the Board, Mr. Alex Machaskee. The dedicated volunteers of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Committee gathered 200 people to raise almost $15,000 for the work of IOCC! Hats off to the Albuquerque Committee for a successful first event!

Daily Prayer for IOCC Volunteers
O Heavenly King, Comforter, who grants all blessings, we thank You for Your abundant grace and mercies. Help us to be good stewards of Your treasury through the ministry of IOCC.
Help us to strip ourselves of our earthly adornment, so that the poor may be sufficiently clothed and fed. And, by so loving our neighbor, adorn us with the everlasting pearls of virtue instead.
Where there is suffering, help us to bring Your mercy. Where there is despair, Your hope;
Where there is war, allow us to present You who are the Prince of Peace;
Where there is pain, You who are the Comforter; Where there is hatred, You who are Love;
Where there is death and destruction; You who are the Resurrection and Life.
Daily guide our work in IOCC, so that we may do all things, in every place and at all times, for Your glory. Amen.
