IOCC Volunteer Update – January 2010
“The beginning of love of money is the pretext of almsgiving, and the end of it is hatred of the poor. So long as he is collecting he is charitable, but when the money is in hand he tightens his grip.” — St. John Climacus

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY
Join us on Sunday, February 7 in our 12th consecutive Souper Bowl of Caring by mobilizing your parish to feed the poor and care for the needy here in the US and abroad. This is a great way to get youth involved! Here is what your parish can do to participate:
1. Download and insert the Souper Bowl ad slick in your parish bulletin
2. Ask parishioners to bring a non-perishable food item and small monetary contribution to the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, February 7
3. Decide on a monetary goal for your parish to reach and to which local soup kitchen you will donate the non-perishable food items
4. Have youth collect donations on Sunday, February 7
5. Deliver food and monetary contributions to the organizations you want to support
For more information on how your parish can participate in Souper Bowl Sunday, visit the IOCC Souper Bowl of Caring website.

IOCC IS CHALLENGING YOU!
Be watching for the Chairman's Challenge at the end of January. Our IOCC Board members graciously match donations from IOCC supporters. As soon as materials are ready, we will get them to you to inform your parish about this unique opportunity! |
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
A classroom full of three and four year olds dig into their bowls of Cheerios. On closer inspection, you see that their placemats are also diagrams marking where to place bowl, spoon and napkin. This is a "Family-Style Meal" at a Head Start program in suburban Baltimore, meant to teach these pre-schoolers etiquette at meals. Since 2008, IOCC has been providing the National Head Start Association with over $3 million dollars worth of books and school supplies. IOCC's assistance has reached Head Start programs across the country.

JANUARY VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT
Maria Christodoulou
Maria Christodoulou began working on the Washington, DC Metropolitan Committee in 2009. Maria is a pleasure to work with and has done a great job in her first year as the Washington, DC Metropolitan Committee Chair.
She first learned about IOCC several years ago when she signed up for an IOCC volunteer trip to New Orleans.
"During my first year as chair" says Maria, "I learned about the commitment of IOCC staff and their willingness to always lend a hand and that the energy you put in equals the money you raise equals the greater difference IOCC can make in someone else's life".
Maria says she would like to have more events, raise more awareness about IOCC, and get more people involved with the committee.
To learn how you can become involved with IOCC or the Washington, DC Metropolitan Committee, please visit the IOCC Get Involved Today website. If you have any questions, please contact IOCC Assistant Outreach Coordinator Megan Carniewski at mcarniewski@iocc.org or call toll-free 1-877-803-IOCC.

Daily Prayer for IOCC Volunteers
O Heavenly King, Comforter, who grants all blessings, we thank You for Your abundant grace and mercies. Help us to be good stewards of Your treasury through the ministry of IOCC.
Help us to strip ourselves of our earthly adornment, so that the poor may be sufficiently clothed and fed. And, by so loving our neighbor, adorn us with the everlasting pearls of virtue instead.
Where there is suffering, help us to bring Your mercy. Where there is despair, Your hope;
Where there is war, allow us to present You who are the Prince of Peace;
Where there is pain, You who are the Comforter; Where there is hatred, You who are Love;
Where there is death and destruction; You who are the Resurrection and Life.
Daily guide our work in IOCC, so that we may do all things, in every place and at all times, for Your glory. Amen.
