Richmond, Va. (IOCC) For the girls of the Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church basketball team in Richmond, Va., teamwork extends beyond the confines of the basketball court.
When the South Asia tsunami hit, the 20 girls, ages 13-18, knew they had to do something. The teammates then learned about IOCC’s humanitarian relief efforts in the wake of the tsunami and decided to hold a bake sale at church to support those efforts.
The January fund-raiser, one of many held by Orthodox parishes and organizations across the country since the December 26 tsunami, raised $1,200 toward IOCC’s tsunami response.
“This is my first year coaching these girls, and it has been such a huge blessing in my life,” said Coach Andrea Junes Baker. “They have bonded so well together, and they wanted to do something for IOCC after the tsunami. I was so proud of them and our church community for rising to the occasion.”
