Basile the Comedian

Growing up Greek in America was the theme of the evening at the Holy Cross Community Center in Mt. Lebanon, PA.  Renowned comedian Basile provided humor that crossed all ethnic lines and filled the hall of 300 people with thunderous laughter.  The event was hosted by the IOCC Pittsburgh Metropolitan Committee and the Holy Cross Church Philoptochos.   Focal point of the magnificent buffet table was a memory tree with photographs of our immigrant ancestors.  It is often said that one generation plants trees, and the next enjoys its shade.  Our ancestors struggled to build a life for us in this country and now it is our turn to return our gratitude by helping others struggling in other corners of this world as well as in our own country.

Nicholas Chakos spoke about current IOCC programs including the current needs of those affected by the fires in Greece.  Nicholas Terezis, chairperson of the IOCC Pittsburgh Metropolitan Committee also spoke about the local events, and the nearly $100,000 raised in the past four years by the Pittsburgh group.  The event generated nearly $9,000 for IOCC.   The Committee extends its sincere gratitude to the Holy Cross Church, Philoptochos, parish council, and to Fr. John and Pres. Sandy Chakos for their efforts in making this such a successful event.
